Mechanic Duties & Responsibilities at BR

Here’s a brief overview of what it takes to be a mechanic on our team:

  • Understand and follow established working procedures, and, when necessary, establish and communicate new methods to improve efficiency.

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the operating principles of our machinery. You will need to understand how to diagnose problems using specialized tools and catch issues before they become bigger problems.

  • Maintain our machinery in safe working condition while carefully watching for equipment problems and potential problems. This means repairing and replacing broken parts to keep our machines running great.

  • Develop and use maintenance routines for keeping machinery in safe working order and being adjustable to the plans.

  • Create and maintain accurate records of your work and the state of our equipment. If progress is made or an issue arises, this needs to be reported, or you may have to give advice on when machines need to be serviced.

  • Communicate consistently and effectively with other staff members to maintain a safe and efficient working environment.

  • Maintain composure and control if and when unexpected or unusual situations arise. Emergencies happen, so it's that much more important to know the equipment and understand how to jump in if a problem arises and resolve it quickly.

At BR, our mechanics work one of two shifts (first or second), performing onsite and in-shop equipment repairs. We have an indoor, temperature-controlled, four-bay shop, a wash bay, and a dedicated equipment/parts room.

Pavers, rollers, and skid steers are some of the equipment our asphalt paving crews use daily and that you may be working on. On the excavating side of our business, you may be repairing dozers, backhoes, or small dirt-moving equipment. We also have graders, reclaimers, and milling machines.

Finally, we have our fleet of quad-axle dump trucks and lowboy semi-trailers. We purchase high-quality equipment from reputable companies such as CAT, Weiler, and Wirtgen.

During your shift, you'll report to the shop foreman, who will distribute daily work. You'll also work with shop helpers responsible for keeping working areas clean, running parts, and performing other duties that allow our mechanics to work as efficiently and safely as possible.

Our Core Values at BR

As a mechanic on our team, you'll be expected to live out our company's core values every day. That means you'll align yourself with the following operational principles.

Safety

We expect all our team members to actively keep our work environments safe while promoting a positive safety culture. We believe maintaining a safe workplace is the responsibility of everyone on our team, so we work diligently to keep our team members safe and require you to do the same.

Respect

Respect promotes healthy working relationships within our company and with clients and vendors working outside our organization. To maintain a positive company image, we expect all team members to respect one another because a respectful staff is a hallmark of a respectful company.

Integrity

At BR, we expect our team members to objectively do the right thing—even when no one is looking. Working with integrity drives a high level of expectation and builds trust among our team, clients, and vendors.

Trust is a cornerstone of a reputable, successful company, and we've worked diligently to build and maintain that image over the past 75+ years.

Commitment

At BR, we work as a team, meaning we all share a bond—a commitment to one another and our organization. If you join our team, you'll be expected to share in that commitment.

We truly believe that committed employees bring exceptional value to our organization because dedicated team members are supportive, productive, reliable, determined, and quality-driven. If that sounds like you, you'll fit right in.

Quality

When you work with us at BR, you work with a team that prioritizes doing everything to the best of our ability. We expect you to prioritize quality in everything you do as well.

Mechanic Training Program

BR recently established a robust training and mentoring program for our shop personnel. The main priority is to pair mechanics with minimal experience in heavy equipment with veteran mechanics to learn from and grow in their careers.

This mentorship program involves weekly check-ins tailored to the mentees' abilities and goals, which allows the mentors to provide timely feedback.

Our training program also includes weekly group training with our daytime shop foremen. This format facilitates cohesive team operations and consistent communication throughout the team.

Topics discussed may include system operations, troubleshooting techniques, or company updates.  Mechanics may also request issues they want to learn more about in the group training, benefiting all employees.

Finally, a video library covers topics newer mechanics might need to review before performing the work. These resources are available to our mechanics or anyone who helps in the shop during the off-season.

Equipment Is a Top Priority at Bitmunious Roadways, Inc.

At BR, we pride ourselves on purchasing quality equipment and keeping it, our largest capital investment, up and running every day. This is a critical component of our business. If our equipment is not running, our projects will be delayed, causing frustration from customers and staff alike.

Keeping up with repairs and purchasing top-of-the-line equipment ensures a quality job, helps retain the equipment's employees, and increases customer satisfaction.

BR has three main equipment programs: routine maintenance, rebuilding, and purchasing. Our mechanics play a critical role in the routine maintenance and rebuilding of our equipment.
