What Exactly Is Pipe Bursting?

Underground water and sewer lines need to be replaced when they are damaged beyond repair, whether due to aging and corrosion, tree roots and other blockages, or to replace potentially harmful lead pipes that can leach into water supplies.

When you imagine a pipe being replaced, you likely think of a big construction job that involves digging up large holes and trenches to access the existing pipes. For obvious reasons, these  conventional ways of pipe laying can be time-consuming and messy. Depending on the placement, replacing underground pipes can mean shutting down streets to become construction zones.

But thanks to innovative methods like pipe bursting, underground utilities can often be installed with minimal excavation.

How Does Pipe Bursting Work?

When you are facing a pipe replacement project, you likely don’t want to deal with an extensive construction site where  large areas of the property will need to be excavated. With pipe bursting, broken or old pipes can be replaced more effectively.

Here’s how it works:

  1. During the pipe bursting process, launching and receiving pits are established. These holes are smaller than traditional pipe trenches.
  2. Then, a pneumatic tool is pushed through the existing pipeline. This is done using four-inch hardened steel rods.
  3. The pipe bursting tool then forces or “bursts” the existing pipe out, which leaves room to place the new pipe, while pulling the new pipe in place

Using this modern technology, pipe replacement is much simpler and creates less of a mess. But, as with all contractor services, you want to partner with a company that has the right tools and expertise in pipe bursting.
