America Recycles Day is scheduled for November 15, 2019. On this day, people will organize events to help educate people on recycling many different household items. However, BR has played an important role in recycling something you can’t find in your home, but what you drive on. Since the early 1970’s, BR has been incorporating recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) into newly produced asphalt mixtures. When mixed with recycled asphalt, the new mixtures can be as high, or even higher, in quality as pavements made of virgin materials. When you look at it this way, it never loses its value. This sustainability practice has many economic, environmental and societal impacts.

Chances are, if you are in the Twin Cities metro area in the summertime, you will see a Bituminous Roadways, Inc. (BR) truck, or employee performing work on a street or parking lot. However, there is also a danger when walking through or near a construction site. The average person may not be aware of these dangers.

The asphalt paving industry is just beginning to get its “foot in the door” when it comes to automated systems. The idea is to take an engineered design or survey of a site and create a working grading plan for a project. From that point, equipment has become smart enough to read these designs and create them in real-time with an operator’s guidance. This technology is called machine control, and it will soon play a major role in every phase of an asphalt paving project, from dirt-work to paving.

In 1979, WIRTGEN built their first cold milling machine designed to provide the asphalt paving industry an innovative rehabilitation technique. Based on technology from the mining industry, these machines use dozens of carbide-tipped bits on a fast rotating drum to remove a specified thickness from the surface of an asphalt pavement. With the invention of the milling machine, asphalt contractors can now remove and replace a portion of the asphalt pavement, which has several key benefits.

Spring is almost here! This means you may begin to notice that the condition of your asphalt pavement is less than optimal. Minnesota winters are hard on asphalt parking lots, roadways, and trails, causing cracks to form or expand through freeze-thaw cycles. Spring is an excellent time to assess the condition of your asphalt pavements so you can start budgeting and preparing for any maintenance or rehabilitation your pavement may need this summer.
