According to a first-of-its-kind poll, we know Americans understand and agree that investing in transportation is a core function of government. Among the findings:
- 88 percent of Americans are aware that maintaining a strong transportation network is vital to ensuring a strong US economy.
- 83 percent agree our transportation ensures national defense and emergency response.
- 71 percent know that growing traffic congestion causes the cost of goods to rise.
In 2011, the average US household paid $46 per month in gas taxes. This compares to average household expenses of $160 per month for gas and electricity, $161 per month for phones, and $178 for internet access and cable and satellite television.
If we invested in transportation infrastructure in line with what we routinely pay monthly for other necessary services, we could see significant cost savings for the goods we buy, plus enjoy better commutes and safer roads.
