During the holiday season, many people make lists of gifts they need to buy. These gifts will go under the Christmas tree or be sent to a relative. For Kent Peterson, owner of Bituminous Roadways, Inc. (BR), making his holiday gift list consists not of people, but of organizations deserving of donations or sponsorships that help people in the local Twin Cities metro area and around the world.
Giving back to the community has always been an integral part of BR’s corporate responsibility. The previous owner, Palmer “Pete” Peterson, Kent’s father, was a generous man. Mr. Peterson created the Peterson Family Charitable Foundation to support charitable organizations. One local organization in particular provides housing for those with severe disabilities. It was a personal goal of his to help create a place where people could feel safe, and were well taken care of.
Kent learned early on that giving is important. “My dad was a big influence on me,” says Kent. “He was pretty charitable.” Even before Kent could take over the asphalt paving business, his father had a requirement for Kent to fully fund the Peterson Family Charitable Foundation.
Over the years, BR has established relationships with organizations through this spirit of giving. One in particular is Urban Ventures, based in Minneapolis, near the BR asphalt plant in the Phillips and Powderhorn neighborhood. Urban Ventures founder, Art Erickson, loved to drive around and stop at places to see what was going on. One day, he decided to make a stop at the BR Minneapolis plant and started a conversation with Mr. Peterson. In doing so, he shared his vision of building a “Highway of Hope” through the gang stricken neighborhood in Minneapolis. Through his generosity, Mr. Peterson donated resources to build the asphalt parking lots at the Urban Ventures campus. Since then, Kent has helped maintain those asphalt parking lots through donations of time and material.
“Outreach, on the part of Bituminous Roadways, has helped the inner city work,” Mr. Erickson said. “Palmer Peterson just got it,” he adds, speaking about the connection between businesses and the commitment to community.
There are other companies BR has supported through the years by way of in-kind donations including asphalt paving, asphalt patching, crack sealing and more. Those include, MN Adult & Teen Challenge, Habitat for Humanity, Guild Incorporated and the American Red Cross, to name a few.
Not to mention more than 50 organizations BR donates directly to, or sponsors through marketing opportunities.
Here at BR, we are committed to our customers and our employees. We strive to be the company of choice by providing asphalt products and services that exceed our customers’ expectations and by providing a safe and rewarding environment for our employees. We are also a company committed to helping those in need right here in our local community.
During this holiday season, we at Bituminous Roadways ask you to think about those organizations you’d like to support. And in the spirit of giving, give a gift that might not fit under a Christmas tree – your time, your talents or a monetary contribution. Merry Christmas!
